New Interview ! w/ Prince Pankhi

What was your first powerful memory with music?

I won my first DJ competition in 3rd grade at St Paul’s Primary in Westmoreland, Jamaica. I was singing at a competition on a Friday, but I had missed school earlier that week and everyone was surprised because they didn’t think I was going to come that day, but once I show ,you kno it was a dun deal !

What happened next?

I use to represent for my school, Little London Secondary, as an artist in Green Island Hanover, Jamaica.

When did you make your first recording?

I use to play with a sound system Santana, a neighbor in Westmoreland. Down in the town sometimes they would have something like bashment. When I pass thru they knew I was good on the mic because they knew my style from home. Then I would mash up them place because my selector knew me, and I knew them.

Who are your biggest influences musically?

Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Jacob Miller, Burning Spear, Culture, Toots, Garnett Silk, Capleton & Sizzla

What led you to Rastafari?

I wanted to make more positive music with conscious songs. At that time then I knew the way we were living as youths we were going to jail or prison after we finished school. I was baptized as super young youth in church, but I realized that it couldn’t help me. I knew the way we were living we would be a victim to the system. As I got older, I realized I needed to get out of that vibe and Rastafari was a savior to me. So spiritually and physically I feel better now, following the Ital diet and sticking to fresh and natural food.

When did you link with Capleton & David House?

Gun Courtlan Jamaica when we were living at a Nyabinghi Foundation in Hanover, and I went to the Capleton and Sizzla show in Savanna-la-Mar. Some of the Nyabinghi linked me with Sizzla and I got a chance to sing on stage and I got invited to Bobo Hill and later went to David House and linked with Capleton.

What are some of the highlights from touring?

When I toured with Capleton & David House, Europe was one of the best welcomes I ever got from the audience. I also had a great show in Brixton with Otis Riddim and recently went to Colombia with one of my production partners/band Sampling Dub where the people have a great vibe and really love reggae music. Also, now I’m playing a lot of shows here in the Northeast, United States and have Entourage Recordings as my own label.

What was the inspiration behind the message and lyrics for the new single World Peace (League of Nations)?

That was directly from his Imperial Majesty’s Haile Selassie speech at The League of Nations when he was calling out for World Peace and standing up for Ethiopia 1936 after the Italian invasion in 1935. Also combined with current events from witnessing the aftermath of 9/11 in New Jersey when I first moved up here and all of the following Middle East conflicts to the continuing turmoil now, abuse of human rights, genocides and conflicts in Africa like Sudan and Congo. Plus, the economic warfare on all the people living in ghettos poverty and terrible living conditions, we want World Peace!

What do you like doing when you are not making music?

I like to meditate, watch the ocean and nature, or anything to educate and uplift. Away from that, just go out have fun, dance, and it is like a therapy.
